In doing this, one distinguishes three features of the situation: the decision to be made, the chance and unknown events which can affect the result, and the result itself. The most commonly studied and discussed value is economic value, which we assume to be measured in dollars. Given a stream of cash flows over time, we use the NPV to describe the current value of future cash flows. The NPV is a calculation perfo rmed on cash flows over time, allowing one to condense that stream of cash flows into a single number. We use the NPV of profits or cash flows as a measure of the value of the new technology project. The NPV calculation makes use of the discount rate, which has several interpretations, but can be thought of as a factor applied to future income to reflect the fact that it is less valuable than income received now. It also reduces the impact of future costs, since costs that can be deferred into the future are preferable to those that must be paid now. In thinking about the value of a scenario, it is helpful to distinguish between direct and indirect values. Direct values are cash flows directly related to a project, for example, the profits resulting from the manufacture and sales of a new product. Indirect values are things that the decision maker values that are not likely to show up in accounting statements. For example, a decision maker may experience pride or goodwill in prod ucing some products and value such an outcome beyond its direct economic value. These indirect values could include costs associated with, for example, laying off workers, or negative impacts on reputation. While some of these indirect values are intangible, others are tangible but difficult to put a number on. The new technology leads to better NPV although the labor and materials costs is higher. The new technology as shown by the results between Part II and Part II is better than reducing labour cost. We can see that in table 4 comparing it with table 2 and table 5 with table 3. As decision makers ponder the possible outcomes of their decisions they often think about risk, which is the possibility of an undesirable result. In discussing this, it is convenient to consider the notion of a risk-neutral decision maker. Someone who is risk neutral is willing to play the long-run odds when making decisions, and will evaluate alternatives according to their expected values. While an insurance company may evaluate individual policies as if it were risk-neutral, for alternatives with substantial risks, decision makers are often risk averse, which means that they value alternatives at less than their expected values. To make this definition of value precise, we define the certain equivalent, (or certainty equivalent) of an alternative as the amount that the decision maker would be indifferent between (1) having that monetary amount for certain or (2) having the alternative with its uncertain outcome. Investing in additional personnel or reducing labour cost, while at the same time stopping the funding of some stalled projects, is a strategy intended to lead to that goal. The outcome of the action of a new technology product is better than that of recucing labour cost. An important special case of a strategy problem is the portfolio problem, in which the various decisions faced in the strategy are of a similar nature, and the decision maker does not have sufficient resources for funding all combinations of alternatives. The profitability of the new product we are developing is sensitive to the market share we achieve. Everyone wants the outcome to be as good as possible, and in that sense might be interested in knowing to what uncertainties the outcome is sensitive. In new technology product we have certain new prices for costs an sales revenues and we can take better decisions. However, if one is interested in achieving clarity o f action, as opposed to predicting the future, one need only be concerned about those uncertainties which would change the decision if we could know in advance how they will turn out. The direct value of a new product might be the current value of the future cash flow associated with the manufacture and sale of the product. The indirect value might include effects like increased goodwill or strategic advantage that come from having the product but are not directly associated with the manufacture and sale of the product. Typically, maximizing the NPV associated with a product should be one of the decision makers objectives. The decision maker might, however, assign value in excess of a cash flow based NPV, and that increment might be for what is sometimes termed strategic value. These indirect sources of value must be included in the NPVs, if one is to think appropriately about values. It is better to put a rough value on these indirect sources (so it can be discussed and evalu ated) than to assume they are worth precisely zero. The certain equivalent for a risky new product is the smallest sum of money for which the decision maker would be willing to sell rights to that product. The expected NPV for the product is the hypothetical average NPV from numerous independent launches of identical projects. The new technology project cannot be repeated and we might value gambles at less than their expected values. The attitude towards risk varies from decision maker to decision maker and, even for a specific decision maker, may vary over time. Although a character of few pages and few words, I find Honey Brown to be the most compelling and intriguing figure of The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers. Honey Brown, the foster brother of Berenice, drifts into the story only a handful of times, but his presence, even in the shadows of the scenes, creates a growing curiosity for the reader and ignites a profound empathy for his account. His quiet and stunted dialogues and solemn nature create an enigmatic yet noteworthy narrative. His struggle with racial confinements and inability to conform leaves him without a purpose and with a soul perpetually tormented and eventually broken. McCullers personifies the extreme realities of Frankie’s fears of entrapment and exclusion in†¦show more content†¦The size of his part in the novel reflects his role in society, minor and mostly shoved to the corner to be forgotten. Interestingly, while he is concealing his brain from the world and rejecting his own capacit y, he hides in Big Mama’s kitchen reading for so long that his nose is about to â€Å"grow into [the] book† (127). To the world he portrays himself as slow and dull, but under his faà §ade is a brilliant and vibrant mind, which only a few are fortunate enough to glimpse. However his success in academia was not always so hushed and he was not always so pessimistic about his own prospects. He had been the â€Å"first in his studies at the colored high school† and had taught himself French as well as â€Å"played the horn† (128). One could easily say he was a prodigy. However, somewhere in his transition from adolescence to adulthood, his ambitions become disillusions and his world becomes smaller to the point where he becomes confined to the barriers of his mind. He has so much going for him, but the era he lives in will never acknowledge his potential for greatness. It is heartbreaking to see such a great mind doubt himself, but the tolls of societal burdens are mercilessly detrimental. Member of the Wedding delves into these constraints caused by societal set identities through different points in people’s lives, but only Honey, at this time, is beaten down by these woes so violently. Organisational change Failure at Kent The organizational changes introduced by Luis in response to the problems faced by Kent were ineffective since the three new global business directors (GBDs) appointed by him were struggling just after a few months of taking up their respective posts and responsibilities. The different organisational changes introduced by Luis in Kents operations failed and they were unsuccessful to resolve the conflicting situations which arose at the various levels of the business operations of Kent. The object of appointing the global business directors failed miserably since the appointed individuals did not have a definite role which would provide them the framework to understand the specific activities that they were responsible for. The in depth analysis of Kent Chemical International (KCI) and Kent Chemical Products (KCP) is crucial to understand the various internal strengths and weaknesses of the concern as well as recognising the various external opportunities, scope and threat that come across their path in the global business scenario (Shiel, 2013). Strength- Once the firm gets an insight about the markets and factors that drive it, in various nations, they can recognize its strengths and how it can be used as a competitive tool. There is need for thorough restructuring of the organisation depending in the below factors: Strength The Kent firm needs to understand the market scenario in order to understand the various positives that it has so that it can use it to enhance its business performance and productivity in the global and domestic market. Kent should focus on establishing a communication network so that all the domestic and global participants operate on a single platform and there will be no scope of any party to think of self interest in the business firm. Since the firm has always relied on its technology based research to develop new products, it needs to increase investment its technological research so that it can introduce its process and enhance the products which will enhance its global performance (Titi, 2013) . Weakness Since Kent lacked proper coordination among the subsidiary business organisations, whenever the firm plans to make any organisational change in the business undertaking it needs to keep all the segments of the business in loop so that they dont feel left out and they also develop a team spirit while working for Kent organisation. In the current scenario, the global business directors were struggling because there was no coordination with the domestic managers. Thus Morales and the management need to improve the coordination function of Kent in order to improve its communication channel and enhance the overall productivity of the business in the local as well as international level. Opportunity Kent needs to analyse the market conditions of all the markets where it has a presence so that it can understand the different opportunities that exist in the prevailing market. This strategy by the firm will help it to adopt relevant strategies in different market scenarios which help it to get fruitful results in the market (Vicien-Milburn, Garca-Mrquez Papaefstratiou, 2013). Threat Since Kent operates in various markets, it faces competition in both local market and in the international market. It needs to focus on a competitive advantage, i.e it can differentiate its offerings either by adopting product differentiation model or cost differentiation model. This strategy in the market will help it to have a competitive advantage in the market against its rivals and competitors. Thus Luis Morales must consider all the aspects and recommend the management which will help it to adopt a flexible business model so that it can adopt different business strategies depending on the market environments and the factors that operate in the particular market environment. The Chairman Ben Fisher must also focus on a model which will be adaptable to the changing business scenario. Since the needs and demands of consumers are ever changing the chairman must introduce a model which will be able to adapt to changing conditions. The top officials of Kent Company need to work together to bring about changes in the organisation restructuring of Kent while considering all the players whether big or small who play a role in its operations (Wise, 2013). Conclusion Kent Company has a lot of opportunities and scope to increase its performance and productivity in the market and be a market leader. But due to the organisational restructuring issues and lack of proper integration of its international operations with domestic operations, it is unable to use the positive factors prevailing in the global market environment to its advantage. The firm needs to adopt customised strategies depending on the market type and demand pattern of the particular set of consumers. For the products which perform well on a global market, the firm needs to establish a better management and control at a global level. All these steps are crucial for the business operations of Kent so that it can further expand in the global market and acquire more number of customers.
